"Tai Chi is better than drugs for treating depression in the elderly".

"The older you get, the more likely you are to suffer depression.  Instead of reaching for a powerful antidepressant that probably won't work, try tai chi, the slow body movement exercise from China.
The exercise is better at reducing depression and anxiety than a powerful antidepressant, say researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles.
In the study, 112 adults aged 60 or older with major depression were treated with a standard antidepressant for a month.  But 73 of the group reported only a slight improvement, and so they performed tai chi for two hours a week for 10 weeks.
At the end of the exercise, 94 per cent of the tai chi group said their depression was much improved – and 65 per cent of these said their depression had gone".

We might wonder why Tai Chi is so very effective at helping with depression.  Perhaps its to do the meditative and relaxation affects of Tai Chi.  Solution focused Hypnotherapy recognises that depression is a response of the Fight and Flight mechanism if the brain.  Perhaps Tai Chi is calming down the this system and allowing the intellectual brain to regain control.  You can follow this thread of thought at Solution Focused Hypnotherapy - The Quarry Therapy
